GMDSS Handbook
The entry into force and
implementation of the global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS)
between 1992 and 1999 was the most far-reaching development in maritime
emergency assistance since the invention of the radio.
The GMDSS Handbook presents the principles on which the GMDSS is based,
the requirements for its implementation, the standards to be met by GMDSS
equipment, and the method of operation of the various radio services which
make up the GMDSS.
Parts 1 to 5 introduce the backgroud to the GMDSS, describe its
development, outline the various communications systems within it, and lay
down the requirements for equipment and operational procedures. Part 6
describes the shore-based side of the system, while parts 7 and 8
introduce the Master Plan for the GMDSS and offer guidance on maintenance.
Eleven substantial annexes present the 1988 GMDSS amendments to SOLAS
1974, the revised NAVTEX Manual and International SafetyNET and the Master
Plan for the GMDSS, relevant IMO resolutions and circulars, equipment
performance standards, relevant articles of the ITU Radio Regulations and
resolutions of the WARC, and data on the CSOPAS-SARSAT system.
The new edition contains up-to-date versions of relevant IMO resolutions
and circulars, the GMDSS Master Plan, COSPAS-SARSAT System Data, ITU-R
recommendations and Radio Regulations |
